School Nurses

School nurses and school nurse assistants provide a variety of medical services to the academic communities in which they work. They oversee the health of the students in academic institutions including performing routine screenings and providing as-needed emergency and non-emergency care to students. They also serve as a medical resource to the school community, providing teachers, students and parents with relevant health information.

Required Skills

School nurses must be knowledgeable in mental, pediatric and public health to be able to work independently as educators and health care providers in a school setting. School nurses must possess strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication and referral skills. They also need the passion to act as a student's advocate and a firm knowledge of school policies and education laws.
